"Walang forever" is a phrase that most millenials are uttering when it comes to love life or even in friendship. However, Nena and Tining rejects that idea.
The two lovely grandmothers are BFF's (Best Friends Forever) for 80 years and their story is amazing interesting.
According to Inquirer Lifestyle, for three generations, 101-year-old Carmen "Nena" Consing La'O and 97-year-old Cristina "Tining" Aberasturi Lopez are friends and they are inseparable.
Tining is the vocal and affenctionate one. While Nena just sits on her chair while having a beautiful smile on her face.
"We both spoke Spanish, so that's what drew us together. Her family was very kind to my family and Nena was always nice to me, very mabait. She was so intelligent!" Tining enthusiastically said.
Back in 1937, Nena was 20 years old while Tining was only 18 years old when they became friends. Lope Consing is Nena's father and a judge. Basque is Tining's father that was employed by the Escaños.
However, their blossoming friendship has to pause for a little while because after a year, Nena from Tacloban moved to Manila and studied in University of Santo Tomas to finish Medicine. It was also in Manila where Nena met a law student named Julian La'O, Jr. who later became Nena's husband and they got married on 1941 at her parent's farm in Cadiz.
At the same time, Tining went to Dumaguete to attend a fiesta and to her surprise, she met Cesar "Cesing" Lopez, Sr. the lucky guy who captured the heart of Tining because aside of Tining at that time, had a bunch of suitors, he attended the fiesta though he wasn't supposed to go that day. If he didn't went that day, he won't be meeting her future wife.
"Some prayers, God answers right away. And you may not believe me, but I was in church one afternoon, kneeling and praying so hard for her to tell me who I should marry. My eyes were closed tight when, all of a sudden, a voice in my head said, ‘Ese! Ese! Ese!’ (That one! That one! That one!) So I opened my eyes and, to my great shock, it was Cesing walking toward me after receiving Holy Communion!" Tining recalls.
After they got married, Cesing and Tining went back to Cadiz and to Tining's surprise, the farm next to them was owned by the family of Nena. Good thing because Tining said that she had no friends and luckily enough, she met Nena once again.
"I was overjoyed to discover that Nena was in Cadiz, too! I came to Cadiz with no friends, and I did not speak the dialect. I did not know anyone else except my husband and in-laws. Finding Nena again made me very happy! From then on we became the best of friends. I would turn to her for everything because she seemed to know all the answers, because she was a doctor. I did not know a thing, especially when it came to the children," Tining said.
Their husbands, Julian and Cesing also became friends sae as with their children.
Recently, Nena celebrated her her 101st birthday and while her guest are gleefully celebrates her birthday, she was just quietly smiling and nodding at them. But when the time Nena saw Tining, her eyes sparkled with joy and the two would be like teenagers again.
Mahjong according to Tining was their secret in having a long and happy life.
It may seem unbelievable but these grandmas managed to have a friendship that spans for 80 years and it's something we find amazing. Both of them have lovely children, Nena had six kids while Tining had seven.
Tining and Nena is a proof that forever in friendship does exist!
